Medium Range Tactical Rifle (MR-TACR)
This course incorporates aspects of our tactical application rifle courses with a focus on engagements from close-in (0-300 meters) to intermediate range (300-600 meters). It offers a look back to the classic standard of riflemen being expected to capably engage man-sized targets out to half a kilometer, as well as a theoretical glimpse at the capabilities of a modern squad designated marksman. We will discuss external ballistics, cartridge selection, data on prior engagement (DOPE) cards, and wind/range estimation and compensation.
The first range session will consist of tactical/dynamic shooting drills on the tactical range from 0-200 meters. 250 rounds of any non-penetrator type ammunition will work for this portion.
The second range session will be on the known-distance rifle range, focusing on shooting from 100-600 meters. For medium-range shooting we suggest long/heavy-for-caliber bullets, especially in the .223/5.56 cartridge (75/77 grain bullets), as these better resist wind drift over distance. We recommend a minimum of 100 rounds for this portion of the class.
Rifles for this course should ideally be equipped with a magnified optic capable of reaching from point-blank to 600 meters. We recommend a 1-4x, 1-6x, or similar adjustment range low variable power optic with some kind of milling reticle and/or exposed turrets. A red dot with a magnifier may theoretically work, but not without difficulty. A good quality bipod or other shooting rest is also recommended.
